Lori Ann Panarello
Southold
Lori Ann Panarello, a celebrated hairstylist, salon owner, and founder of the North Fork Pride Parade, passed away at home after a year-long fight against glioblastoma, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. She was 67.
Born June 15, 1959, in New York City, Lori was one of three children of Anna (née Tumino) and Thomas Panarello. She graduated from John Adams High School and attended St. John’s University, where she majored in marketing.
Lori built a long and distinguished career in the hair industry. In the mid-1990s she joined the Sebastian Professional Artistic Team, and in 2003 she opened ID Salon in Syosset, later moving it to Woodbury. An award-winning Goldwell Titanium salon, ID Salon employed 35 to 40 people before it was sold in December 2025. Around 2010 she joined KMS California, where she became a Global Style Council Member and Global Artistic Director for KMS Hair. In 2016 she founded Beauty United Against Bullying, and in October 2020 she opened Craft Hair in Greenport.
A dedicated community leader, Lori served on the boards of the LGBT Network and North Fork Women. In June 2023 she founded North Fork Pride and helped launch the first North Fork Pride Parade in Greenport. That year she was named Community Leader of the Year by The Suffolk Times, and in June 2024 the Southold Town Board honored her for bringing North Fork Pride to Greenport. In June 2026 she served as the parade’s Grand Marshal.
On June 14, 2019, the day before her 60th birthday, Lori married Catherine Canadé, after seven years together, in Jamesport and together they made their home in Mattituck and then Southold. Lori was also a tremendous animal lover, supporting causes benefiting dogs, elephants and giraffes. Catherine and Lori had three pets: Julian, a big tabby cat; Tutti, a chiweenie; and Paolo, a mini dachshund. Their darling Tutti passed away at age 16 on Sept. 4, 2026.
Lori was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Thomas Panarello. She is survived by her wife, Catherine; her children, Luca, Sofia and Isabella Washenko; her grandson, Atticus Emanuel; her sister, Debra Parisi (married to Richard); her nieces and nephews Justin Parisi (married to Ashley), Hayley Matarazzo (married to Charles), Jared Panarello and Alex Panarello; and her great-nieces and great-nephews Olivia, Ace and Elle Matarazzo and Marlowe and Jett Parisi.
The family will hold a private interment in November. A private Celebration of Life will take place in June 2027.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society (nationalbraintumor.org), Pitbulls and Addicts Dog Rescue (pitbullsandaddicts.org), or the LGBT Network (lgbtnetwork.org).
Arrangements entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.
Messages of Sympathy
Lori was a great mentor to work for at ID Salon. Her confidence and enthusiasm was contagious. She reached the heights of the hair industry (which is not easy to do) and generously shared her knowledge, wisdom, and advice. She was also fun to talk to and laugh with. I’m still in shock that she’s left us and will probably always be shocked. She went through a brutal illness and my faith tells me she’s back home with God- and truly free. She did a lot of good with her life and used her talents well, and left behind a legacy of art, leadership, and community involvement. ✊🏼 Rest easy, Lori, until we meet up again. 🙏🏼 🪽 Helen
