David H. Jos of Jamesport—a devoted father of two, loving husband, and deeply kind and empathetic soul—passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at age 80. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family, as well as a watermelon he was especially proud to have grown that season in his Jamesport garden.
David was born on April 18, 1946, in Huntington, New York, to Louise R. (née Gibson) and Michael G. A. Jos. One of two children, he is survived by his beloved brother, Phillip Jos (Marion). David graduated from Cold Spring Harbor High School and later attended Pace University. He was a devoted father to his two children, Michael and Davida Jos, whom he loved dearly.
At Pace, David began pursuing the education that would lead to his career in accounting—and, eventually, to meeting his soulmate. He served the State of New York faithfully for nearly 40 years as an audit accountant. During the late 1970s, while working in the state’s Trade Center offices, he met Mary (née Walag) Jos, the love of his life. David and Mary married in 1981 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Greenwood Heights, near the Brooklyn neighborhood where Mary grew up.
Beginning in the early 2000s, David cared for Mary following the serious burns she suffered in September 2001. Over the next 25 years, David and Mary cared for one another, their family, and the garden at their Jamesport home.
As a young man, David was a member of and volunteer with the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department. He was also an avid boater and could often be found on Long Island Sound in his yellow 1968 bowrider—sometimes cruising for pleasure and sometimes clamming or fishing for fluke with close friends such as Captain Lou. A skilled gardener, David transformed a half-acre plot behind his Jamesport home into a fruitful garden.
David is survived by his wife, Mary; his brother, Phillip Jos (Marion); his children, Dee Jos Danna (Peter) and Michael C. Jos (Kristen); and his grandchildren, Callie Danna and Alexander Danna. The family has chosen to remember David’s life privately at this time.
The clarity of David’s final days allowed him to share some of his deepest sentiments: he loved his wife, children, and grandchildren completely. He cherished the friends who helped make his life such a gift, the soil beneath his feet, the chance to make a new friend, and the promise of growing something for the following spring. He was a bright light in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
David was an extraordinary parent, grandparent, and friend. Anyone whose life was touched by his love, candor, or goofy faces is encouraged to honor his memory through a charitable contribution.
Our love for you never ends, Dave—Grampy, buddy, brother.
