Margaret Joan Modica of Manorville passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026. She was 84 years old. The family received friends on Friday, August 14th from 8:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home, 13805 Main Road (Rte.25), Mattituck, New York 11952 (***11 miles East of the L.I.E., Exit 73***). The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated following the visitation at 12:00 P.M. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, 14300 Main Road (Rte.25), Mattituck, New York 11952 (diagonally across the street from the funeral home), officiated by Father Michael Bartholomew. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery, 3494 Depot Lane, Cutchogue, New York 11934. Family and friends are encouraged to park in the church parking lot for the services at the funeral home and church, and utilize the crosswalk to walk between the two. Obituary Margaret “Margie” Joan Modica, 84, of Long Island, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Westhampton Beach, New York. Margaret was born on November 1, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Margaret Burns. She grew up in Ozone Park, Queens, and was proud of her Irish heritage and deeply devoted to her Roman Catholic faith. Throughout her life, her faith and family were at the heart of everything she did. She built a life defined by love, generosity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people she loved. Margaret was the beloved wife of James Modica and the loving mother of four sons, Joseph Michael, Christopher John, Kevin James, and John Matthew. She was the cherished grandmother of 15 grandchildren and the loving great-grandmother of two, with another great-grandchild expected soon. She is survived by her sister, Alice Maresca and is predeceased by her sister Catherine and her brother Joseph. Those who knew Margaret will remember her for the warmth and kindness she showed to everyone she encountered. She welcomed people without judgment or prejudice and had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel comfortable, accepted, and loved. Her home was always open, and over the years, it became a special gathering place for family and friends. Holidays and family celebrations brought her great joy, especially when she could gather her children and grandchildren together under one roof. Watching her family grow was one of her greatest joys. Margaret’s Catholic faith was an important part of her life and guided the way she cared for her family and those around her. She lived her faith through her generosity, compassion, and devotion to others. Her loving heart, welcoming spirit, and genuine kindness touched countless lives and created memories that will be treasured by her family for generations to come. A funeral service was held at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, New York, on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Margaret’s funeral Mass followed at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue, New York, took place immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that Margaret and James have supported for more than fifty years. Margaret was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, and a woman whose faith, kindness, and love for her family will never be forgotten. Her greatest legacy is the family she loved so deeply and the countless memories she created with them. She will be profoundly missed and forever loved.
