Veronica "Ronnie" Elizabeth Matovcik of Laurel passed away at home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. She was 74 years old. The family received friends on Monday, August 3rd from 4-7 P.M. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, August 4th at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by Father Abraham Thannickal. Interment followed at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold. Memorial donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center would be appreciated. Obituary Veronica “Ronnie” Matovcik, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family in Laurel on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the age of seventy-four after a brave two-year battle with cholangiocarcinoma. Born on November 19, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, Ronnie attended St. Agatha’s Elementary School and later graduated from Fontbonne Hall Academy in Bay Ridge. On June. 23, 1974, in Our Lady of Częstochowa Church in Brooklyn, she married the love of her life, Gerard “Jerry” Matovcik. Together they built a home in Rocky Point, NY, centered around their two beloved children, Heather and Melissa. Before marriage, Ronnie worked as an auditor in the international division of Citibank in Manhattan. As she was raising her daughters, she worked for a time in office administration and later, fulfilling a dream, she graduated college with an AS in Nursing. Ronnie was an active member of St. Anthony’s Church in Rocky Point, creating and teaching Faith Formation Classes for Children, serving on the Liturgy Committee, the RCIA, and as a Eucharistic minister to the sick and homebound. Over the years, Ronnie enjoyed spending time in NYC, Boston, Philly and D.C., frequently traveling and meeting with friends and family to visit art museums, her favorites included the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick, and The Barnes. Ronnie enjoyed Sundays at St. Patrick’s Parish in Southold. She faithfully prayed for her friends, family and fellow parishioners and was deeply grateful for their prayers throughout her illness. She was especially thankful to Father Abraham for providing her with the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum. Loving her family with all her heart is Ronnie’s lasting legacy. She is survived by her husband Jerry; children, Heather (Jay), and Melissa; Jay's brother Greg (Laura) and by her adored grandchildren, Juliet Renee and Violet Veronica, and Kenneth Gerard and Nolan Thomas. The family remembered Ronnie’s life with a service at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck on Monday, August 3rd, from 4 - 7 P.M. Mass at St. Patrick’s in Southold, Tuesday, August 4th, at 11 A.M. followed by burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Friends and family may honor her memory with a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
