Stanley Gordon Brown of New Suffolk passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026. He was 87 years old. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23rd from 4-7 P.M. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice or Eastern Long Island Hospital would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Obituary Stanley Gordon Brown, longtime North Fork Resident, of New Suffolk, and formerly of Southold, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026, due to complications of injuries sustained in a fall. He was 87 years old. Stanley was born on May 17, 1939 in Washington D.C. to Ida R. (née Branfman) and William A. Brown. He was one of two children. He attended Sidwell Friends School, and then Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physics, magna cum laude, in 1960. He continued his education at University of California, Berkeley, and then University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a PhD in theoretical particle physics in 1966. For some years he pursued an academic career, publishing 15 scholarly articles between 1967 and 1973 while holding post-doctoral positions at Cornell, MIT, and UCLA, and Stony Brook University. Stanley married Margaret (née Haapala), the love of his life, on February 28, 1970 in the chapel at her alma mater, College of the Pacific. They had two children, Tracy Liorah, born in 1974, and Ethan Spencer, born in 1977, and made their home on the North Fork. The tragedy of his life was Tracy Liorah’s death at 34, leaving behind her 3 year old twins, Ariel and Perry. He and Margaret played an active role in raising these two oldest grandchildren. Stanley’s unwavering love and support helped give them the foundation to thrive. In 1974, he accepted a position with the American Physical Society as an editor of the journal Physical Review ‘D’, which published research in his area of specialty, and subsequently Phys. Rev. Letters, their premier publication. For many years, he served as editorial director at APS, which he found rewarding and challenging. After 33 years at APS, he retired from full-time work and was happy to continue to do editing on a part time basis. He continued in this capacity until 2016, when he fully retired. Throughout his life, Stanley enjoyed jazz, musical theater, and movies, from “The Maltese Falcon” to the latest Mandalorian. He was also an early adopter of personal home computers, starting in the 1980’s with a green-and-black text-only device used for doing the family’s taxes. In recent years, his interests combined as he digitized his vast vinyl record collection of the music he loved so he could play it from his Mac or iPhone. Two other interests wove through his life, from age 6 when he reported to his mother that Warsaw had fallen. Reading the newspaper daily spurred him to get involved in politics, including canvasing for Eugene McCarthy in 1968 (pictured in the New York Times), volunteering for Barack Obama, and many regional races, and his political passions drove him to stay current on the news. The latest edition of the NY Times was in the room the day he died. Predeceased by his daughter Tracy Liorah Brown Gardiner; and brother Robert A. Brown; Stanley is survived by his wife Margaret; son Ethan Spencer Brown (Abigail Anthony) of Jamestown, RI; grandchildren Ariel, Perry and Viktor Gardiner, and Benjamin, Toby and Sam Brown; son-in-law Matthew Gardiner of North Kingstown, RI; and sisters-in-law Sally Brown of Silver Spring, MD and Sue Marten of Napa, CA.
