Irene Rita Stewart of Southold passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026. She was 90 years old. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 7th from 2-4 P.M. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Obituary Irene Rita Stewart, longtime Southold resident, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026. She was 90 years old. She was born on February 19, 1936 in Queens, NY to Mae (née Vickers) and Henry Cordes. As a child, she would summer at Founders Landing in Southold. She graduated from the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, NY. From there she attended Pratt Institute of Arts where she attained her Bachelor's Degree. She was a former member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Southold. She was also a member of the Detroit Unity Temple in Detroit, Michigan, where she was the Book Store Manager for the church book store. Irene is survived by her children Laura Latham (John) of Seaford, NY and Alan Stewart of Southold; grandchildren Kaitlyn Latham, Grace Gambella and Lily Hain; and great-grandchildren Amelia Gambella and Ethan Gambella. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 7th from 2-4 P.M. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.
